A better texdoc?

Tuesday, 27 December 2005 00:27 by CSchenk

Right now I am working on a new utility which shall replace the texdoc batch utility. The one big drawback in texdoc is that it often fails to locate package-related documentation. For example, the invocation

  texdoc memoir

doesn't work because the main documentation file is named memman.pdf.

The new utility (working title: mthelp) uses the package manager to locate package-related documentation, i.e.,

  mthelp memoir

opens memman.pdf for viewing.

I am still searching for a nice name.

How about 'packman' (like package and manpages)? Perhaps the name is more or less ™?

This seems to be a very useful tool! For me, the easiest way to use it would be if it were incorporated into MiKTeX Options, maybe as a fourth tool on the "General" tab. It could be called "Find Documentation for Installed Packages".

It would be very useful too if:
1) it is easily accessible from the editor, without superfluous other fnctionalities (I mean that, e.g., mpm is not necessary).
2) it should be able to sort out the 'real' doc among readme's, examples, etc.
3) Nevertheless, it happens that the only 'real' doc is just some kind of a readme. How about that case?
4) maybe a direct access to some of the most used packages, to be chosen by the user.

Yes, an improved texdoc is much needed. The problem you are describing is very present - try searching for the hyperref documentation...

The idea of using the package manager info is great. If there are several possible files, I hope the program can let the user choose (maybe with .pdf/ps/pdf as a default).

I'm looking forward to it.

Regards,
Hans

PS! Please keep the program a commandline tool (possibly with a GUI as en extra).

Sounds great, I'm looking forward to it.
Regarding the name: what about TNT (á la TNT is not texdoc)... (c;

So did you make the "better texdoc" yet? Smile

It would be very helpful...
