The bst files of elsevier are not packaged in elsevier package.

There are no bst files in the elsevier package (CTAN).

See CTAN:macros/latex/contrib/elsevier. This directory does not contain any BST files. CTAN is the source. I do not grab files from other places.

BibTeX style file elsart-harv.bst for articles with Harvard style (author-year) references. When you use this style file, you should also use the natbib package.

In fact, the elsevier bib styles are on CTAN, just not in the latex/contrib directory: eg. see .

You write that guit and m-bib have been removed. Should I now remove guit.cab and m-bib.cab from my local repository? I am asking this strange question, because these two files can still be found in the MiKTeX package repository on http://www.ctan.org/.

Yes, the two cab files can be removed. I have done this for the primary package repository.
