Package download broken

Friday, 25 January 2008 04:02 by CSchenk

It is currently not possible to download packages from the repository. I will fix this in the next few days, say until the end of the month (let's hope). Please remember: I do this in my spare time.

Update (Feb 25):

Without a warning, my web space provider (webhost4life.com) has just stopped the MiKTeX web sites. They say, that "the number of HTTP request is so heavy that causing our server up and down. To maintain the overall heavy usage, we have no choice but stop your sites. Please consider upgrade to...".

I don't know, whether (when) wh4l will re-enable the websites. Of course, I will move the website to another provider. But this can take a couple of days/weeks.

Update (Feb 26):

The web service is now up and running again. In order to reduce bandwidth and CPU usage, I have implemented a simple IP filter: if there are more than N requests from the same IP address within a time span T, then that IP address is blocked for a while.

@Jill
If all you're after is to install the PGF package, simply go to:
www.ctan.org/.../pgf.html
click on the link to download it (base.zip), then unzip it to an empty directory on your machine. Then use MiKTeX Options > Roots to incorporate that directory as an extra root within your installation, and it should all work.

Once the MiKTeX repositories are working again, you can cleanly remove your PGF root using MiKTeX Options > Roots, and install PGF via the package manager.

If you actually want to demonstrate the package manager installing PGF, well, I suggest resorting to what screen shots you can gather, and 'faking' the ones you can't get.

To Jill : you could be more polite with Christian Schenk. As he told you, he does his beautiful work, for the hapiness of all of us, in his spare time. Your comment may not encourage him at all to solve the actual problem !

By the way, and until Christain Schenk fixes the repository problem, it seems possible, for those who are in a hurry, to download manually a MiKTeX 2.7 setup and packages on this FTP server :

mirrors.ircam.fr

in the local directory :

/pub/CTAN/systems/win32/miktex/

The repositories work OK now. Thanks!

I had to install MiKTeX while the servers were down. Basic version lacked some of the important packages, but I found alternative way: http://www.tug.org/protext/. It includes MiKTeX complete. I intend to keep it in case something goes wrong with the repositories again.

Yep, downloading works again Smile

But using Miktex 2.5, I don't see any UK mirrors in the list. I would have thought Cambridge and Imperial College should be there. Nothing under England, or United Kingdom.

The Cambridge mirror has been disabled for a reason I do not remember (perhaps because it is one of the master hosts). Imperial College is not yet on the list. But I didn't find it in CTAN.sites either.

Just curious if users can help in addition to donations?

Here's an easy method for installing packages in the meantime...

1) find the package you want on www.ctan.org

2) download and unzip the package into an empty directory. I like to make my directories without spaces, which makes the next part easier.

3) open your command prompt (start menu --> run --> cmd.exe)

4) change your current directory to where you unzipped your package

5) use latex to process the .ins file by by using the command "latex mypackage.ins" where mypackage is the name of your package. This should create a .sty file in the directory

6) run "latex mypackage.dtx" to create the documentation (this is step is not necessary to using the package)

7) create a folder with your package name in the MikTeX 2.7\tex\latex directory and move the .sty file there

8) update your miktex directory (Setting --> Refresh FNDB)

9) ........

10) profit!

Is there a BitTorrent seed anywhere? It would reduce the load on the webserver.

Christian, thanks for your hard work on MiKTeX. I install it on every windows machine I use, and was stuck yesterday when it wouldn't install. I took me a while even to consider that the problem might not be at my end. Anyway, it made me realise that I've been benefitting for a few years from your kind efforts. Thank you.

I was able to download the entire repository from a local mirror and then pointed the update manager to that "packages" directory. It took a bit to d/l it all, but it is also quite easy to now point the manager back to the website without messing with a standard installation.

Hello Christian,

package download is still broken.
After initial install the package manager tries to connect to
api.miktex.org(87.230.91.79). This IP address is down. The miktex-update-program cant be killed. I need a reboot.

I tried to circumvent this by putting the IP address of a different machine api2.miktex.org (80.67.16.8) to my /etc/hosts file but it didn't help either. The installer is crashing stating an "internal problem".

Maybe the IP-addresses are completly wrong due to the provider change or due to slow updating DNS servers.

Please have a look on that.

Best Regards

Thomas

I've been having problems too. When I try to select a repository I just get "http error: no data". In previous years it has been fine.

I haven't been able to use the update wizard for a few days (at least). I am guessing this is related to the problem described by Thomas above (about the IP address in the code not matching the new server).

In the last 24 hours (I think), the error messages has changed to something like "No connection could be made because it was actively refused".

Is anyone able to update using the update wizard or is everyone doing it manually?

Thanks,
Justin.

Update wizard doesn't found the list of packages. So I couldn't use the wizard, too.

I can't seem to add the package psfig.sty to MiKTeX to 2.7. It is given me the hardest time. Is psfig.sty outdated because I need it to compile some of my LaTex documents generated in Texnic Center.

I am quite happy to finally have found this blog and thus the explanation for my many vain attempts of downloading and installing Miktex 2.7 as a complete system or single packages thereof. I was trying again and again since last February and after lots of struggles almost gave up. It is with happiness that I report my successfull download and installation today!

THANKS AND MORE THANKS CHRISTIAN AND ALL THE OTHER CONTRIBUTORS WHO INVEST THEIR TIME IN DEVELOPING AND MAINTAINING MIKTEX!

First of all thanks for MiKTeX Christian.
I ended up at this thread after having problems converting files to pdf format using Lyx 1.5.6. If anyone is having the same issues with Lyx my advice is to follow namq's posting and you can download and install full version of Miktex
http://www.tug.org/protext/
It is not the most elegant solution but if you are in a hurry to meet a deadline it maybe quicker than installing all the required packages manually.
Thanks to all the previous postings,
John

Yes, you can cleanly remove your PGF root using MiKTeX Options > Roots, and install PGF via the package manager. then follow the instruction... thats it.. thanks
