Portable MiKTeX

by CSchenk2. April 2009 11:37

A portable MiKTeX edition will be available later this year. The portable edition allows you to run MiKTeX from a portable flash drive:

  • you carry MiKTeX on a portable drive for use on any Windows computer
  • configuration settings are stored on the portable drive and not on the host computer
  • by using the portable edition, you leave no traces on the host computer
  • you do not need administrator privileges on the host computer

A beta will be released soon.

Works very well on XP-SP2, either as portable off USB or from a hard drive folder.  At my location we require all math majors and many engineers to use LaTeX for homework.  The preferred IDE has been TeXnicCenter but it is not yet available as a portable version.   Therefore, I have been transitioning my students to TeXmaker as it is very similar and runs the same on WinXP, Vista, Linux, and OS X.  This really simplifies the teaching and using of LaTeX with students.   I need to know how to replace the link to TeXworks with a link to TeXmaker.

Good job with this distribution.
